There have been two different vehicles bearing the name, Pontiac Sunbird.
1970s
1980s and early 1990s
The Pontiac Sunbird is built on the General Motors J-body platform which it shares with sibling brands under various names.
The Sunbird depending on the model year came with one of these engines:
After 1994, the Sunbird was replaced by the Sunfire. It could be suspected that this was done to avoid possible confusion with the Firebird, which was another model Pontiac produced.
The 1975-1980 Sunbird was a version of the Chevrolet Monza RWD coupe on the GM H platform.
The 1984 Sunbird is a compact car that was first produced as the J2000 in 1981 for the 1982 model year. From the 1983 to 1984 model years, the J2000 was renamed the 2000 Sunbird. For the 1985 model year, the 2000 Sunbird simply became known as the Sunbird. Production under this name was continued until 1994.
